Neighborhood schools are a community hub

Schools are a hub for local community and connection. If we lose Brown, we all lose this neighborhood resource - for future kids but also for our whole community.

Of the schools Somerville has closed in the last 50 years, none of these buildings were repurposed for community space.

The Powderhouse School was sold off below market rate for luxury condos. Western Junior High was sold to Tufts University and serves as an administration building for the university now.  Other schools closed in the last 50 years sit in disuse or disrepair.

In a dense city like Somerville, space is precious. Let's not give up another precious piece of community space without a plan for how we can revitalize it.
